This brief reference in the
Bible to a man named Jabez who lived thousands of years ago is being popularized
and hopefully used by God
today to encourage, inspire and light a spark in many hearts.
This prayer
isn't presented here to promote a formula for wealth and success (though some
will try to use it that way). I do not advocate and adamantly oppose the
teaching of 'formulas'. There are already too many of these kinds of minefields.
Each generation seems to have a new spin on it and a new name for it, but
it is still the same. If you want to be prosperous and influential, then go
right ahead and seek to be prosperous and influential. Just remember that to
whom much is given, much is required. But I would rather see this as a
heart-felt prayer to have a passion stirred within us to be
used by God in an ever increasing sphere of influence, to impact people for Him.
Bruce Wilkinson has
brought this prayer to light and I fear the extraordinary popularity of
his book by the same name means a new generation of believers will be
snared by the old prosperity, name-it and claim-it teaching. But if we
will keep our hearts and motives pure before the Lord, He can work a
good thing in us.
